Don’t Pay US Domain Authority $289, The Mailer Has Nothing To Do With Your Domain Registration

Justin Babcock • December 27, 2021

Many of our subscribers and clients have started to receive a suspicious letter in the mail from the United States Domain Authority. The solicitation is written as if it is a bill for registering your domain. However, if you take a closer look at the fine print, you will notice that the letter specifically states, We are not a Domain Registrar and we do not Register or Renew Domain Names.

A paper that says marketing services on it

More specifically the letter expresses:

This website listing offer is provided to leading websites throughout the United States to enhance their Website exposure and to expose them to new customers through our directory. We are not a Domain Registrar and we do not Register or Renew Domain Names. The listing period is for 12 consecutive months and must be renewed annually if you wish to renew your Domain Listing and keep it active on our online website directory.

THIS IS NOT A BILL. THIS IS A SOLICITATION. YOU ARE UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO PAY THE AMOUNT STATED ABOVE UNLESS YOU ACCEPT THIS OFFER.

But, they know
they are confusing you by listing at the top of the solicitation, Domain Listings, your domain name, and website listing services.

The reason they can get away with this borderline scam is in the semantics. They are offering you a website listing service, which is different from a website registrar. To the average business owner, these terms seem synonymous and many pay the bill without realizing their mistake.

So, if your bill looks like this…
