The Google My Business App Is Being Replaced - What You Need To Know

Justin Babcock • Apr 07, 2022

You may have received a worrisome email this week from Google with the headline "The Google My Business App Is Being Replaced." The attention-grabbing headline makes you think, Google My Business is going away. Some of my clients have reached out worried about changes to the way they interact with their Google listings.

Well, rest easy. If you are logging into business.google.com, nothing is changing. But, there are a few things you need to know.

Here's what's happening and how it affects small businesses.

Google My Business Branding and Phone App Are Changing

By now, you’ve probably heard of Google My Business. It’s the way for business owners to manage their businesses and information on Google search and maps.

What you may not have heard is that the Google My Business App is being rolled into two separate apps: Google Search, and Google Maps.

Both of these apps access the same business listing information, so you don't have to recreate your listing. And, you can still access your listing through business.google.com. But, sometime in 2022 (no official date yet), your Mobile App for Google My Business will no longer be available. Again, if you are accessing your listing on your desktop, nothing is changing.

It is also important to note, this change won’t affect customers or how they find or contact businesses using Google Maps or Google Search. But it will affect businesses who rely on the mobile app to manage their profiles and reply to customer reviews.

Google My Business is now Google Business Profile Manager

As you may be aware, Google is making some tweaks to how it manages business profiles. The app formerly known as "Google My Business" is getting a new name: "Google Business Profile Manager."

The functionality, however, will remain the same. And here's something that's new: in addition to accessing your profile from business.google.com, you'll also be able to manage it from the Google Maps App or in Google Search.

Edit info directly on your Business Profile

If you have the Google Maps app or you have a mobile chrome browser your apps will be automatically updated on your phone or tablet. You can edit your business hours, address, and phone number, add photos and videos, set a link to your website, and manage posts right on your Business Profile in the Google Maps app or from your chrome browser.

Promote your business with updates, offers, and ads

Again, from your mobile device using Google Maps or Google Search you can access promotion features for Google Listings. Keep customers in the know. Tell them about upcoming events, new products, or special offers with updates and posts on your Business Profile. And you can automatically share these updates with your followers in Google Search and Maps by turning on Promoted pins. You can also set up ads to increase customer visits to your business. Get more customers in the door with a business profile that helps people find what they need—including hours, reviews, photos, and more.

Google may migrate its listings to Google Search and Google Maps.

Getting away from their mobile app might be a signal that they will change desktop access as well. But for now, Google Business Profile Manager is safe (except for the name change). Don’t worry—the browser-based app you use to manage your listings, or your client’s listings, isn’t being replaced. You can continue using business.google.com.

In the ever-evolving digital landscape, establishing an online presence is paramount for every business. A well-structured and designed website can greatly enhance your brand's visibility and credibility. However, the process of creating a website can be daunting, especially when confronted with decisions like the cost of hiring a designer, how to find a suitable one, or opting for a do-it-yourself (DIY) approach using website builders like Wix or Squarespace. Making an informed choice can be challenging, but it's not impossible. Figuring Out Your Budget and Time: The Classic Decision Building a website involves an investment of both time and money. Hiring a designer can cost between $100 to $200 per website page, whereas setting up a website yourself might consume around 4 hours per page. It's a classic time or money conundrum that forces you to reassess your priorities. Do you have the design skills to build a website yourself? If not, using DIY applications may extend the time it takes for you to establish your online presence. However, if your budget is tight, investing your time into learning and implementing the process might be a viable option. DIY Website Builders: A Blessing or a Curse? Website builders like Wix, Squarespace, and WordPress have made website creation accessible to everyone, regardless of technical expertise. But are they always the best choice? Wix Pros: Wix offers an intuitive drag-and-drop interface and a variety of templates, which make it easy for beginners to create a website. It also provides advanced features for more seasoned users. Cons: The flexibility of Wix can also be its downfall, as the wide range of options can be overwhelming. Its SEO capabilities have been criticized, and the free plan comes with ads. Squarespace Pros: Squarespace is known for its sleek, professional design templates. It offers comprehensive features and excellent customer support. Cons: Squarespace's pricing is slightly higher compared to other builders, and the platform can be less intuitive for first-time users. WordPress Pros: WordPress offers incredible flexibility and control, with thousands of themes and plugins. It's a great choice for blogs due to its strong content management system. Cons: WordPress has a steeper learning curve compared to other builders, and you may need to handle updates and security measures manually.
