Investigation Station: a nonprofit website rebuilt without losing a word

Investigation Station is a New Port Richey nonprofit that creates interactive science experiences for Pasco County residents and visitors. In this nonprofit website design and migration project, we moved its site off WordPress.com in 19 days, kept all of its copy and every page address, and added an admin portal for messages.

About Investigation Station

Investigation Station is a nonprofit here in New Port Richey that creates interactive experiences for Pasco County residents and visitors. Its exhibits include the Water Cycle Splash Pad at Veterans Memorial Park in Hudson, From the Sun to Pluto, a one-mile scaled model of the solar system in Starkey Wilderness Park, and the Kidstruction traveling exhibit through the Pasco County Library System. Its current project is Florida Rocks!, a walk through geologic time. Good nonprofit website design for a group like this keeps it simple: show the exhibits, make donating easy, and stay easy to update.

The challenge

Why They Came to Us

The old WordPress.com site still told the story, but platform clutter and a few broken pieces got in the way.

  • Three untouched WordPress demo posts full of placeholder text were still live.
  • The Goodshop fundraising widget never worked: WordPress.com stripped its script and showed the link as plain text.
  • Search descriptions were 400 to 700 characters of automatically copied page text, one of them with raw stylesheet code in it.
  • The homepage said From the Sun to Pluto was one mile, while the exhibits page said two.
  • All 71 images had random code-like file names, which made them hard to find and manage.
The plan

What We Proposed

We proposed a static rebuild that changes how the site works, not what it says.

  • Rebuild the 4 real pages and the 1 real post, plus a new News page so future posts have a home.
  • Keep every page at its exact address, including About at /blog-2/, and redirect everything retired.
  • Evolve the purple and gold identity rather than start over, and keep the PayPal donate button, the YouTube video and the Goodshop link.
  • Add no new content: every line comes from the old site.
The build

What We Built

Website

A light static site with 6 pages, photo galleries and a Donate button in the header.

  • 6 pages: home, permanent exhibits, About, contact, a News page and the 2025 sponsorship post
  • All 71 images from the old media library converted to sized WebP with descriptive names
  • Photo galleries with a keyboard-accessible lightbox, and videos that load only when tapped
  • A homepage drawn from the work itself: a starfield echoing the logo's constellation, rock strata behind Florida Rocks!, and motion that turns off for visitors who prefer reduced motion
  • The logo traced into crisp SVG marks, and My AI Editor on every page so the team can update text and photos

Move off WordPress.com

A migration that kept every page at its address and left the domain where it was.

  • Every page kept its exact address, including About at /blog-2/ and the post's dated path
  • 85 redirects cover the 71 old image files, the retired demo posts and WordPress feed paths, all verified live by request
  • Three WordPress demo posts dropped and redirected to the News page
  • Search titles and descriptions rewritten to fit what Google shows
  • DNS pointed at the new site from inside the WordPress.com dashboard, with the domain registration left in place

Admin portal

A private portal in the site's own purple and gold where the team reads and manages messages.

  • Inbox, leads pipeline, Spam and Blocked review, and an Add lead button
  • Contact form messages land here, with a Phone field in place of the old Website field
  • A Blog tab with two ways to publish in My AI Editor: an AI blog writer or a simple post form
  • Branded with the site's purple, gold accents, self-hosted Plus Jakarta Sans and the logo on the sign-in screen
Problem solving

How We Solved the Hard Parts

  1. Rebuilding without changing a word

We saved a copy of the old site's text and checked the rebuild against it. Apart from one correction the client approved, every passage of five or more words carried over word for word. The old pages disagreed on From the Sun to Pluto, and the client confirmed it is one mile.

  2. Keeping every page address

The client chose to keep every page exactly where it was, which means every address ends in a slash. On that setup a redirect only works if it covers the address with and without the slash, so we wrote both forms and checked all 85 live.

  3. A domain that stays at WordPress.com

The domain is registered with Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, so we pointed DNS at the new site from inside the WordPress.com dashboard instead of transferring it.

  4. A logo that turned into a purple square

The original was a 7,500-pixel square logo file that shrank into an unreadable purple square at header size. We traced the two figures and the constellation into small, crisp SVG marks, one for the header and one for larger uses.

Results

The Results So Far

Investigation Station went live on September 11, 2026, 19 days after the first preview went up. Every page kept its address, all 85 redirects resolve, and the contact form was verified end to end on the live domain, with notifications arriving within a second. Every page measured zero layout shift on the staging build in August, and still did when we rechecked the live site in October.

The organization can now edit its own pages in My AI Editor and read its messages in its own admin portal. We do not have traffic or donation numbers to share yet, so next we are watching contact messages and how the site shows up in search.

Redirects were requested on the live domain at launch and again on October 20, 2026; layout shift was measured on the staging build in August 2026 and on all 6 live pages in Chrome on October 20, 2026; days to launch run from the first preview deploy (August 23, 2026) to launch (September 11, 2026).

Questions

Questions About This Project

Can a nonprofit leave WordPress.com without losing its content?

Yes. For Investigation Station we checked the rebuild against a saved copy of the old site, and apart from one correction the client approved, every passage of five or more words carried over word for word.

Do we have to move our domain off WordPress.com?

No. Investigation Station's domain is still registered at WordPress.com. We pointed its DNS at the new site from the WordPress.com dashboard instead of transferring it.

Who updates the site after launch?

The organization can. Every page has My AI Editor built in, the team was set up on it in September 2026, and descriptive image names make photos easy to find and swap.
