Half Nester™: off Duda and Kajabi, onto a platform its founder owns

Half Nester is the home for life's messy middle, a brand by Dr. Valerie Woo. Our website migration moved the site off Duda and the course off Kajabi into a custom member app with its own community, alongside a Studio for content, all on accounts she owns.

About Half Nester

Half Nester is the home for life's messy middle, the season when people are still deeply needed, but in changing ways. It was created by Dr. Valerie Woo, a pediatric dentist, entrepreneur and speaker, and it brings together a forthcoming book, a guided course and workbook, a member community and speaking. Before this website migration, the public site ran on Duda, the course on Kajabi and the workbook on Google Sheets.

The challenge

Why They Came to Us

Half Nester's pieces lived in three places: the website on Duda, the course on Kajabi, and a workbook held together with Google Sheets and JavaScript.

  • Lesson notes saved to a Google Sheet through one global script, quiz answers lived only in the browser, and members typed their email on every lesson to load their own work.
  • Kajabi's built-in community was basic and saw little use.
  • Social posting was hard to keep consistent, and posts didn't point readers anywhere next.
  • The goal was everything under one roof, on accounts Valerie owns.
The plan

What We Proposed

We proposed a phased build, with everything on accounts Valerie owns.

  • Start with landing pages and lead capture in a new app, then a community, then a full course platform to replace Kajabi.
  • Port the 18 lessons and 21 worksheets as written onto one lesson template and one worksheet component, instead of rewriting them.
  • Keep Kajabi running in parallel, with no hard cut and no redirects, until the new app was proven.
  • Build the Studio as a strategy tool first and a content tool second, with approvals by email so daily content stays easy to keep up with.
The build

What We Built

Website

We moved www.halfnester.com off Duda to a static site on Vercel, with every page's copy carried over word for word.

  • A 34-page check against the live Duda site before the June 20, 2026 cutover found every page word for word, with no Duda code left and the PDFs Duda had served re-hosted.
  • 21 free guides, each emailed on request with an invitation to the free email course, and every request saved to the Studio's contacts, tagged by guide.
  • A merch store with an on-site cart and Stripe checkout. Paid orders go to Printify automatically, and a daily order report arrives by email.
  • GA4 through Tag Manager with a lead event on every form, first-touch ad-click attribution that survives page-to-page browsing, Meta Pixel and Microsoft Clarity.
  • Blog posts go from the Studio to the site through My AI Editor, where pages can also be edited.

Member app

my.halfnester.com took over the course, workbook and checkout from Kajabi, and sends the free email course itself.

  • All 18 lessons ported from Kajabi, with video, podcast audio, autosaving reflections and scored quizzes added throughout.
  • All 21 workbook worksheets, filled in and saved in the app, and printable.
  • An 18-day free email course, one lesson a day, sent by the app itself since June 2026.
  • Checkout moved from Kajabi to on-site Stripe in July 2026, then to monthly plans members can manage or cancel themselves in August.
  • Installs to a phone's home screen like an app, with a dashboard that shows progress and community highlights.

Community

A native community inside the app, built for real people, with room for one clearly labeled AI host.

  • A main Commons feed plus pillar feeds, and one discussion thread for every lesson.
  • Reactions, one-level replies, image posts and an option to post without a name.
  • Member messages that start as requests, plus blocking, reporting and moderation tools.
  • Guided onboarding before a first post, in-app notifications and a weekly digest email.
  • An AI host built with written rules: clearly labeled, humans first, and no medical, mental-health or financial advice.

Content Studio

The Half Nester Studio is the team's private workspace for strategy, content and results.

  • Weekly AI drafts for social, blog, newsletter, essays and stories, grounded in the brand's approved language and checked against Valerie's voice.
  • Approve or edit a draft by replying to an email. Approved posts publish to Facebook and Instagram on schedule.
  • A phone-first video flow: record with a teleprompter, burn in captions, publish as a Reel.
  • KPI dashboards with a daily snapshot and a weekly scorecard, plus a brand page, document library, idea board and launch plan with a Gantt view.
  • Owner, Admin and Content Manager roles.
Problem solving

How We Solved the Hard Parts

  1. Lessons that taught through pictures

Kajabi lessons carried much of their teaching inside images and infographics, so a text-only copy would have lost it. We placed 60 self-hosted images back in position, wrote alt text that carries each infographic's full content, and checked the lessons live as a paid member, a free member and a logged-out visitor.

  2. Leaving Kajabi without a hard cut

Kajabi kept running untouched, with no redirects, while the new pages went live. We pulled all 17 podcast episodes off Kajabi and self-hosted them, then moved checkout to on-site Stripe in July 2026.

  3. A community that stays honest

There are no fake members, and there is room for exactly one AI voice: a clearly labeled host built to let people answer first. Messages from strangers arrive as requests, and blocks are invisible to the person blocked.

  4. Hard posts get people, not a bot

When a post suggests someone is struggling, the AI host is built never to reply in public. It is designed to send a private note with real resources, including the 988 lifeline, and to alert Valerie and our team. Overnight it holds the situation privately until morning, instead of pretending to offer round-the-clock human cover.

  5. Drafts that sound like her

We measure Studio drafts against Valerie's own hand rewrite of a generated post, and the Studio flags the writing habits she cut. A check of the account's 43 Instagram posts found captions over 900 characters earned higher median engagement, so the Studio no longer trims her long captions and checks instead that the first line lands before Instagram's "more" cut.

Results

The Results So Far

The website left Duda on June 20, 2026. Comparing the 90 days before launch with the 90 days ending October 17, Google showed Half Nester's pages 66% more often, and their average position improved from 12.7 to 5.3. Our September SEO pass took the WES SEO audit score from 61 to 93 and cut homepage image weight by 85%.

The app, community and Studio are harder to sum up in one number. What changed is who holds the keys: the course, workbook and checkout now run on accounts Valerie owns instead of Kajabi and Google Sheets, and her content runs from the Studio. Next, the 90-day SEO program continues, and we keep watching search as Google picks up the September fixes.

Search numbers come from Google Search Console for halfnester.com, comparing the 90 days before the June 20, 2026 launch with the 90 days ending October 17, 2026; the audit score and image weight come from the WES SEO audit of September 9, 2026.

Questions

Questions About This Project

Can you move an online course off Kajabi?

Yes. For Half Nester we ported all 18 lessons and 21 worksheets into a custom app, put 60 lesson images back in position and self-hosted 17 podcast episodes. Kajabi kept running untouched while the new pages went live.

Will we lose our pages if we leave Duda?

Not if the move is checked page by page. Before Half Nester's June 2026 cutover we compared 34 pages with the live Duda site, word for word, and re-hosted the PDFs Duda had been serving.

Who owns the code and the accounts?

Valerie does. The website, app and Studio live in her own GitHub organization and run on her own Vercel, Supabase and Stripe accounts.
