ChatGPT vs. Claude vs. Gemini: Pricing, Features and Which AI Is Best for Your Business

If you run a small business, you do not need to become an AI expert to get real value from AI. What you do need is a clear understanding of what you get for free, what becomes limited, what requires a paid plan, and which platform is strongest for the kind of work you actually do.

Pricing and features reviewed: August 20, 2026

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini have all grown far beyond simple chatbots. They can research, write, analyze files, create images, work with business data, help build software and increasingly complete multi-step work on your behalf.

The challenge for a small-business owner is that every company describes its plans differently. A feature might technically be available on a free plan, but only a few times per day. Another feature may be included on a $20 plan but have usage limits. Some of the most valuable business capabilities are only available once you move into team or business accounts.

How to read the pricing charts: In this guide, FREE means the feature is included in that plan. LIMITED means you can use it, but there may be usage caps, reduced access, smaller context windows, slower generation or lower model availability. LOCKED means you need a higher plan or a separate product.
FREE / Included

Available as part of the plan without another feature upgrade.

LIMITED

Available, but with lower limits, reduced access or usage restrictions.

LOCKED

Requires a higher subscription level, credits or a different product.

1. ChatGPT Pricing for Small Businesses

ChatGPT currently offers Free, Go, Plus and two Pro usage levels for individuals, with Business and Enterprise options for organizations. For most small-business owners, the most important decision is whether Free is enough or whether the $20 Plus plan gives you enough productivity value to justify paying for it.

Plan Real Price FREE / Included LIMITED LOCKED
Free $0 Unlimited basic text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, search, projects, GPT discovery and basic browser access. Uploads, images, voice, Deep Research, memory, data analysis, Codex and ChatGPT Work. GPT-5.6 Sol, Sol Pro, scheduled tasks, custom GPT creation and advanced business tools.
Go $8/mo Everything in Free plus more messages, uploads, image creation, voice and longer memory. Advanced tools and heavier workflows still have lower limits than Plus and Pro. Full Pro reasoning and highest-capacity tools.
Plus $20/mo Advanced GPT-5.6 reasoning, better image generation, Projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, expanded Deep Research, Codex and ChatGPT Work. Usage caps still apply to advanced reasoning, research, coding and other intensive tools. Sol Pro and maximum individual usage capacity.
Pro 5x $100/mo Pro reasoning, higher output limits, faster image creation, maximum-class research tools and about 5x Plus usage. Some models and tools can still have individual allowances. Highest 20x individual usage tier.
Pro 20x $200/mo Same Pro capabilities with roughly 20x Plus usage capacity. Reasonable-use guardrails and model-specific allowances can still apply. Very little meaningful functionality is locked for an individual user.
Business $20/user annual
$25/user monthly
Secure workspace, centralized billing, admin controls, company knowledge, apps/connectors, ChatGPT, Codex and business privacy protections. Baseline usage is included and additional usage can require workspace credits. Some advanced enterprise security, governance and support capabilities.
Enterprise Custom Expanded enterprise security, administration, governance, support and deployment controls. Depends on the organization and contract. N/A

ChatGPT Business requires at least two standard ChatGPT seats. Pricing can vary by country, taxes and billing arrangement.

WES Take: Best Starting Point

For an individual small-business owner, ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month is the strongest place to start. You get enough reasoning, research, file analysis, image creation, projects and automation-style features to use ChatGPT as a real business tool instead of just a chatbot.

2. Claude Pricing for Small Businesses

Claude has a simpler pricing structure. The Free plan is useful for occasional work, Pro is the main productivity tier, and Max is primarily for people who use Claude heavily enough that usage limits start interrupting their work.

Plan Real Price FREE / Included LIMITED LOCKED
Free $0 Claude chat, web search, memory, extended thinking, file creation, code execution, connectors and a 200K context window. Usage and access to the full Claude model lineup. Claude Code, Cowork, Design, Science, Research and unlimited Projects.
Pro $20/mo
$200/year
Claude Code, Cowork, Design, Science, Research, unlimited Projects, more models and Microsoft 365 support. Usage pool and premium model capacity. Max-level usage capacity.
Max 5x $100/mo Everything in Pro plus about 5x Pro usage, higher output limits and priority access. Usage is still governed by rolling limits and overall allowances. 20x Max capacity.
Max 20x $200/mo Everything in Pro plus approximately 20x Pro usage. Fair-use and model-specific limits can still apply. Very little meaningful functionality is locked for an individual user.
Team Standard $20/user annual
$25/user monthly
Claude tools plus enterprise search, central billing, SSO, connector controls and no model training on team content by default. Standard-seat usage capacity. Premium-seat capacity and some enterprise controls.
Team Premium $100/user annual
$125/user monthly
Team capabilities plus approximately 5x Standard usage. Usage limits still apply. Enterprise-only governance features.
Enterprise $20/seat + usage Team features plus SCIM, audit logs, retention controls, role-based access and advanced security capabilities. Usage is billed based on models and tasks. N/A

WES Take: Claude Makes Sense for Specialists

Claude Pro is especially easy to justify if your work involves long-form writing, strategy, software development, codebase work, large documents or complex planning . The $100 and $200 Max plans are less about buying a dramatically smarter Claude and more about buying a much bigger usage allowance.

3. Gemini Pricing for Small Businesses

Gemini is different because Google is not only selling an AI assistant. It is connecting AI to the broader Google ecosystem, including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Search, Notebook tools and creative products.

Plan Real Price FREE / Included LIMITED LOCKED
Free $0 Gemini chat, image generation, Connected Apps, Gems, Canvas and access to Google AI tools. Advanced models, research, context, media generation and usage quotas. Highest-end Deep Think, premium usage and some advanced creative tools.
AI Plus $4.99/mo More Gemini access, more Deep Research, Gemini support in Google apps, more media generation and 400 GB storage. About 2x Free access and lower limits than AI Pro. Highest-end reasoning and Ultra capacity.
AI Pro $19.99/mo Expanded Gemini 3.1 Pro access, Deep Research, Gemini in Gmail/Docs/Sheets, Gemini Spark, expanded media tools, 5 TB storage and higher developer-tool limits. About 4x Free access and lower capacity than Ultra. Deep Think and maximum Ultra usage.
AI Ultra 5x $99.99/mo Everything in AI Pro plus higher usage, premium creative tools, Deep Think access where available and large Flow credit allocations. 5x AI Pro usage level. 20x Ultra capacity.
AI Ultra 20x $199.99/mo Maximum individual Gemini usage, premium creative tools, Deep Think and highest-level Google AI access. Reasonable usage and product-specific limits can still apply. Very little meaningful functionality is locked for an individual user.
Important for business owners: If your company already uses Google Workspace, do not look only at the personal Gemini subscriptions. Gemini features are increasingly built directly into Workspace plans, which can make the Google option much more valuable than the standalone AI price suggests.

Which AI Is the Industry Leader?

There is no single winner anymore. For a small business, the better question is: Which tool is strongest for the work I need to do?

Business Need Practical Leader Why It Matters
Best overall small-business AI platform ChatGPT The broadest combination of reasoning, research, images, files, coding, data work, reusable assistants and connected apps.
Writing and editing Claude Very strong at tone, structure, long-form continuity and working thoughtfully with large amounts of text.
Content strategy Claude Excellent when you want to provide a large amount of background and ask the model to understand the whole strategy before writing.
Coding ChatGPT + Claude Both are serious development tools. The better choice can depend on your codebase, workflow and the kind of development you are doing.
Working directly in a codebase Claude Code + Codex Both can move beyond snippets and help work through actual repositories, files, testing and multi-step development.
Gmail, Docs, Drive and Sheets Gemini Google's native ecosystem integration is a major advantage for businesses already living inside Google Workspace.
Huge documents and source collections Gemini Google's large context capabilities and Notebook tools are particularly valuable for large collections of source material.
Deep research ChatGPT + Gemini Both can perform multi-source research and turn it into more useful business outputs.
Image creation ChatGPT + Gemini Both have strong image-generation and editing ecosystems.
Video and multimedia Gemini Google's Flow, video, image and music tools create a strong multimedia ecosystem.
Reusable custom AI assistants ChatGPT Projects, custom GPTs, memory, apps and company knowledge make repeatable AI workflows approachable for small businesses.
All-in-one simplicity ChatGPT If you only want to learn one platform first, ChatGPT currently covers the widest range of common small-business tasks.

What Each AI Is Really Good At

Best Generalist

ChatGPT: Your General-Purpose AI Employee

ChatGPT is the tool I would give to the owner or manager who wants one AI that can jump between departments.

Research these competitors, analyze this spreadsheet, write a marketing campaign, create images, summarize these PDFs and help me build a workflow to automate part of it.

Its biggest advantage is breadth. For many small businesses, it can become the main AI workspace.

Best Specialist

Claude: Your Writer, Strategist and Developer

Claude shines when the job starts with: "Understand all of this before you answer."

That makes it particularly useful for website copy, proposals, strategy, long documents, software projects, technical documentation and complicated planning.

Claude Code also makes Claude especially attractive to businesses building or maintaining custom software.

Best Ecosystem

Gemini: Your Google Employee

Gemini becomes much more powerful when your business already works inside Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Calendar, Meet, Search and YouTube.

Instead of constantly moving information into a separate AI tool, Gemini can increasingly help where your business information already lives.

Best Strategy

Do Not Become Loyal to One Model

Small businesses do not have to choose a team and defend it. Use the best tool for the task.

You may use ChatGPT all day, open Claude for a complex writing or coding project, and use Gemini when the work is deeply connected to Google.

What These Features Actually Mean to Your Business

1. Advanced Reasoning

You do not need the most advanced model to write a simple social media post. You do start to benefit from stronger reasoning when you ask AI to evaluate several pieces of information, make tradeoffs and recommend what to do next.

Here are our sales for the last 18 months, advertising expenses, close rates, margins and customer acquisition costs. Figure out what is changing, tell me why, identify the highest-impact problem and build a 90-day strategy.

Better reasoning can mean fewer mistakes, better connections between information and less time spent correcting or re-explaining what you want.

2. Usage Limits

One of the biggest misunderstandings in AI pricing is assuming that a $100 plan must be five times smarter than a $20 plan. In many cases, you are mainly buying capacity .

If you use AI three times per day, the $100 tier probably makes little sense. If AI is helping write, research, code and analyze work for hours every day, higher usage limits can become valuable.

Small-business rule of thumb: Start with the $20-level plan. Upgrade because the limits are interrupting productive work, not simply because a more expensive plan exists.

3. Context Window

Context is how much information the AI can keep in mind while working on a task. A larger context window matters when you need the AI to understand large documents, long conversations, codebases or collections of files.

For a business, that might include contracts, technical manuals, customer research, proposals, years of meeting notes, website code, financial reports, policies or training materials.

4. Deep Research

Normal AI search is closer to asking, "Find me information about this." Deep Research is closer to telling someone, "Investigate this, compare multiple sources, reconcile the differences and bring me back a useful report."

For a small business, that can include:

  • Competitive research: Who are the strongest competitors in our market and how do we compare?
  • Product research: Which CRM, website platform or software tool should we buy?
  • Marketing research: What questions are customers asking before hiring a company like ours?
  • Market research: Is a particular city, service line or customer segment growing?
  • Sales research: What should we know about this prospect before tomorrow's meeting?

5. Projects, Custom GPTs and Gems

These features help turn a generic AI into something much closer to your company's AI assistant .

You can provide brand guidelines, pricing, service descriptions, target customers, examples, internal terminology and instructions so you do not have to explain the business from scratch every time.

ChatGPT uses Projects and custom GPTs. Claude uses Projects and related organizational tools. Gemini uses Gems. The names are different, but the business opportunity is similar: build reusable context instead of starting every conversation at zero.

6. Memory

Memory helps an AI retain useful context about how you work. For an individual user, that can make the assistant more efficient over time.

For a company, however, there is a difference between personal memory and company-controlled knowledge . Business and Team plans become more important when multiple employees need access to consistent company information and administrators need control over how that information is used.

7. Connectors and Business Apps

Connectors may become one of the most important AI features for businesses because they reduce the amount of manual copying and uploading required to get work done.

Instead of downloading a spreadsheet, uploading it to an AI, explaining what it is and then copying the result somewhere else, the goal is increasingly:

Look at the latest sales information and tell me which customers need attention.

The value is not just a better answer. The value is removing steps from the process.

8. Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex

These are not simply tools for asking AI to "write some HTML." They can help work with real software projects.

For a small business, that can mean building or maintaining:

  • Customer portals
  • Internal dashboards
  • CRM integrations
  • Custom quoting systems
  • Automations
  • Websites
  • APIs
  • Database applications
  • Internal business tools

A business owner does not necessarily need to become a software developer, but AI is dramatically reducing the cost of creating custom software when the project is properly planned and supervised.

9. AI Agents, Work, Cowork and Similar Tools

Traditional chat follows a simple pattern: you ask, AI answers.

Agent-style AI is moving toward: you give the AI a goal, it completes several steps, uses tools and returns the completed work.

Research 20 potential customers, determine which ones match our target customer, review their websites and prepare a prospecting brief for the best opportunities.

This is the point where AI begins moving from content generation into actual labor automation.

10. Image and Video Generation

Small businesses often think of AI images as a novelty. They can actually become part of a normal creative workflow.

AI can help create:

  • Social media graphics
  • Blog imagery
  • Advertising concepts
  • Product mockups
  • Website graphics
  • Presentation visuals
  • Storyboards
  • Concept renderings
  • Video assets

11. Business Privacy and Administration

This becomes more important as employees start putting customer data, internal documents, contracts, code, financial information and business strategy into AI tools.

Business and Team plans can add centralized billing, account administration, organization-level controls and stronger default protections around company data.

For a growing company: The reason to move from several personal AI accounts to a business workspace is not always that the AI becomes smarter. The bigger benefit can be control, consistency, privacy and administration.

12. API Access Is Different From Your Subscription

This is one of the most important concepts for a business owner to understand.

Paying $20 per month for ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro or Gemini AI Pro gives you access to the AI product. It generally does not give your website, CRM or custom application unlimited access to that AI.

Subscription Example

You open Claude and ask: Write a response to this customer.

API Example

A customer completes a form on your website. Your software automatically receives the lead, analyzes it, classifies it, creates a CRM record, drafts a response and assigns it to the right employee without anyone opening Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini.

That second example uses an API, and API usage is normally billed separately based on usage.

A Practical AI Buying Strategy for a Small Business

1

Start With ChatGPT Plus

$20 per month. Use it for writing, research, images, documents, spreadsheets, analysis, brainstorming, coding and everyday business questions.

2

Add Claude Pro if You Write or Build Heavily

Another $20 per month. This gives you a second frontier AI for long-form writing, strategy, software development and second opinions. For many professionals, ChatGPT Plus plus Claude Pro at about $40 total can be more useful than immediately spending $100 or $200 on one platform.

3

Use Gemini Where Google Already Runs the Business

If Gmail, Docs, Drive, Sheets and Meet are already central to the company, evaluate Gemini and Google Workspace together instead of treating Gemini as a completely separate tool.

4

Move to Business Plans When AI Becomes Infrastructure

Once several employees are using AI with company information, start thinking about centralized workspaces, privacy, permissions, shared knowledge, administration and API-driven automation.

The Simplest Way to Remember the Difference

ChatGPT: Help me run the business.

Claude: Help me think, write or build this really well.

Gemini: Help me work with everything already living inside Google.

My Small-Business AI Stack

Position Tool Why
#1 Primary AI ChatGPT Plus, $20 Best overall toolbox for a small-business owner who wants one place to start.
#2 Specialist AI Claude Pro, $20 Excellent for writing, strategy, coding, large documents and complex work.
#3 Ecosystem AI Gemini / Google Workspace Especially valuable when the company already runs on Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive and the Google ecosystem.

The biggest mistake is treating AI like a software subscription you buy and then forget about. The real value comes from learning which business processes AI can improve, building repeatable workflows and giving your team a clear way to use it.

You do not need every paid plan. You do not need the most expensive model. You need the right combination of tools for the work your business actually performs.
